President Macron in China while China plunders the Pacific of its fish stocks

French President Emmanuel Macron visited China to hold discussions about Russia and Ukraine with China’s Leader Xi Jinping. The pair visited the centuries old-dam in Chengdu, Sichuan province, to symbolise the strengthening relationship between China and France. France and China also signed up to 12 cooperation agreements including on nuclear energy.

French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot also had a meeting with his Chinese counterpart.

The last time President Macron visited China was in 2023.

Meanwhile, as the French and Chinese leaders signed cooperation agreements, Chinese fishing fleets were out in force in the Pacific sweeping fish stocks along several maritime borders including along with the Philippines and Peru. China is the world’s largest extractor of fish stocks in the world, and the world’s leader in illegal fishing.
