European agriculture output growing: technology replacing labour

According to the latest Eurostat statistics, the European agriculture industry has seen noticeable growth in 2025, with labour productivity increasing by 9.2%, compared to the previous year. The productivity increase was driven by an 8.1% in real factor income generated by agricultural holdings and 1% reduction in the volume of agricultural labour.

Agricultural labour productivity increased in 19 countries with the top increases taking place in Luxembourg (40.1%), Poland with 33.4% and Estonia with 30.9%. Declines were recorded in 8 EU countries including in Croatia with -14.9%, Portugal with -10.7% and Greece with 8.8%. Malta’s agricultural labour productivity increased by a couple of percentage points.

Gross value added by the agricultural industry went up by 10.3% in 2025 compared to the previous year. The value of agricultural output increased by 5.3% while intermediate consumption increased by 1.5%.

In 2025, EU agricultural productivity was up to 49.4% higher than 2015.
