Ħamrun Spartans closed their UEFA Conference League league-phase campaign with a 3–1 defeat away to Shamrock Rovers, in a match largely shaped by a controversial red card shown to Joseph Mbong before the half-hour mark.
Reduced to ten men early on, the Maltese champions struggled to contain the Irish side, who capitalised on their numerical advantage to register their first European win of the campaign. The result saw Shamrock Rovers finish on four points, while Ħamrun bowed out with three after a historic debut league phase.
Giacomo Modica welcomed back Vincenzo Polito following suspension and handed a rare European start to Nikolai Micallef at left-back. Saliou Thioune also returned to the starting XI, while Ryan Camenzuli was sidelined through injury and Eder was initially left on the bench.
Shamrock Rovers fielded highly-rated teenager Victor Ozhianvuna, already secured on a record transfer to Arsenal, while Roberto Lopes captained the hosts.
Mbong sending off crucial
The Irish champions made a strong start, forcing Henry Bonello into an early save from Rory Gaffney. Ħamrun responded with aggressive pressing and created danger from set-pieces, with N’Dri Koffi seeing efforts blocked and headed off target.
The breakthrough came on 13 minutes when Shamrock were awarded a penalty after Polito was adjudged to have handled the ball. Graham Burke made no mistake from the spot. Ħamrun reacted positively and Koffi soon levelled matters, finishing from close range after sustained pressure.
The match swung decisively on 27 minutes when Mbong was shown a straight red card, his second dismissal of the campaign. Just before half-time, Shamrock restored their lead as Daniel Grant converted from close range following a Burke delivery.
Modica reshuffled at the break, introducing Jovan Cadjenovic and Stijn Meijer, but Shamrock continued to control proceedings. Bonello kept the scoreline respectable with several interventions before substitute John McGovern sealed the result deep into stoppage time.
Despite the defeat, Ħamrun conclude their European adventure having made history for Maltese football, with attention now turning back to domestic duties.
