Yesterday, the Minister for Energy and the Environment Miriam Dalli gave a press conference along with Enemalta’s Executive Chairman Ryan Fava.
They announced a nine-year plan which is aimed at upgrading the electricity grid. The plan has not been published and the press conference was made only to issue the announcement. No details of the plan were announced but the Ministry’s press release states that up to โฌ90 million have been spent on the electricity grid and a further โฌ40 million was spent on electricity distribution centres since 2023. The only detail that has been announced that in nine years the government will build 12 new distribution centres, and a new 132kV link between Malta and Gozo.
The increased funding came after the electricity grid began collapsing in the 2023 heatwave leading to multiple deaths due to heatstroke among elderly people. The Energy Minister has been regularly addressing consecutive crises via PR about her government spending and projects.
Malta is suffering from a severe energy crisis and the solution to this crisis is never-ending subsidies.
