Sweden and Finland request ban on maritime services to Russian ships and ban on exports of luxury products

In a letter sent to the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, Finland and Sweden have proposed three new measures to increase pressure on Russia. These measures include, a total maritime services ban on Russian ships carrying oil, increase pressure on Russian fertiliser exports, and a total ban on European luxury exports goods to Russia.

Italy and France remain major exporters of luxury goods to Russia especially via third-countries.

A maritime services ban on Russian oil-cargo vessels would also effect service-ships that frequently sail through Hurd’s Bank to offer offshore services. The request is also being made while the US is currently conducting worldwide operations to seize Russian ships involved in the trafficking of Venezuela oil.

Finland seized the Russian cargo-ship Fitburg last December after the ship, which sailed from Saint Petersburg,ย  damaged an undersea cable in the Gulf of Finland. Latvia also seized a Russian ship earlier this month after the ship damaged an undersea cable between Latvia and Lithuania.
