Valentino Garavani dies at 93: Fashion icon who defined Italian elegance passes away in Rome

Valentino Garavani, the legendary Italian fashion designer whose refined gowns dressed generations of royalty, celebrities and style icons, has died at the age of 93, his foundation announced. He passed away peacefully at his home in Rome, surrounded by family.

Born in Voghera, northern Italy, in 1932, Valentino trained in Parisian haute couture before founding his own fashion house in Rome in 1959. He rose to international fame for his timeless elegance and his signature shade, famously known as โ€œValentino red.โ€

A pivotal figure in global fashion, Valentino built his empire alongside long-time business partner Giancarlo Giammetti. His clientele over the decades included Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, royalty and, later, supermodels and Hollywood stars. His designs became red-carpet staples at the Oscars and beyond.

Valentino retired in 2008 after more than four decades at the pinnacle of fashion. In recent years, his namesake brand continued under new creative leadership amid wider industry changes.

According to his foundation, a public viewing will be held at Piazza Mignanelli 23 in Rome on 21st and 22nd January, 2026, with the funeral scheduled for Friday, 23rd January at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri.

Widely regarded as one of the last masters of old-world couture, Valentino leaves behind an enduring legacy of elegance, craftsmanship and unmistakable style.
