Mġarr United open nine-point gap at the summit as title bid gathers pace

Mġarr United tightened their grip on the Women’s League title race by opening up a nine-point lead at the summit, moving a step closer to a historic first championship.

The Greens were in imperious form as they swept aside Valletta 5–0, effectively settling the contest before the interval with four first-half goals. Brenda Borg set the tone with a quick brace, while Valeria Villegas and Yulya Carella also got on the scoresheet before the break. Borg and Villegas both went on to finish the match with two goals apiece.

Valletta remain bottom of the standings with just one point, although winter recruit Daisy Reino was handed her first start for the Citizens.

Swieqi United took full advantage of Hibernians’ stumble to climb into second place following a comfortable victory over San Ġwann. Jade Flask and Salamatu Abdulai struck in the opening half to give Swieqi control, before Sara Saliba and Flask added to the tally after the restart.

San Ġwann, who stay on four points, handed debuts to January signings Karina Figueredo and Isabel Otalvarez after their recent arrivals.

Hibernians slipped to third place after being held to a lively 2–2 draw by Birkirkara, who claimed their first points of the season against a top-three opponent.

Birkirkara made a flying start as goals from Stella Francalanza and Momo Ueda put them two goals up, but Hibernians pulled one back just before the interval through Natalee Geren. The Paolites completed the comeback in the second half when Geren’s effort resulted in an own goal by Julia Zarb to level the score.
