European Parliament President Roberta Metsola met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome during her official visit, highlighting the importance of close cooperation between European institutions and national governments.
The talks, described as open and constructive, focused on key European priorities and Italy’s strategic role within the European Union. Both leaders underlined the need for strong coordination to address shared political, economic, and geopolitical challenges.

Following the meeting, Metsola addressed broader European issues during an interview on Cinque Minuti, a programme hosted by Bruno Vespa on Rai Uno. Speaking about recent parliamentary discussions on the EU–Mercosur agreement, she said the European Union remains open to trade agreements with third countries “with whom it is possible to trade,” citing not only Mercosur but also Chile and India.
Metsola stressed that, thanks to the leadership of the Italian government, unprecedented safeguards for European farmers have been secured. These include reciprocity clauses and the possibility of applying stricter standards to products entering the EU.
Commenting on the recent summit between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Metsola praised both leaders as pragmatic and welcomed closer cooperation between Rome and Berlin, particularly on joint defence proposals. She described the exchanges between Italy and Germany as “a sign of optimism,” highlighting the importance of collaboration between two major European economies working together for their shared future.
