Naxxar Lions rout Mosta in emphatic derby display to boost survival hopes

Naxxar Lions delivered a commanding performance as they swept aside neighbours Mosta, sending out a strong message that they are determined to recover from a disappointing Opening Round and secure their place in the top flight.

The Lions were in control from the outset and showed their attacking intent early on. After just 11 minutes, Vinicius went close with a shot that drifted narrowly wide, before Louis Pahama attempted an acrobatic overhead kick that failed to trouble the target.

Naxxarโ€™s dominance was finally rewarded on 26 minutes when Joao Victor broke the deadlock, firing past goalkeeper David Akpan to put his side ahead. Mosta were left reeling and the pressure quickly told again, as just two minutes later Vinicius unleashed a powerful drive that left Akpan with no chance, doubling the advantage.

The contest was effectively settled before the interval. On 42 minutes, Joao Victor struck again, rising to meet a cross with a firm header that made it 3-0 and underlined Naxxarโ€™s superiority.

Mosta struggled to mount any meaningful response after the break, and Naxxar continued to dictate proceedings. Substitute Gabriel Goncalves added a fourth goal on 66 minutes with a well-placed header, further compounding Mostaโ€™s woes.

The rout was completed in the 72nd minute when Pahama got on the scoresheet, firing home from close range to cap off a memorable and emphatic derby victory for the Lions.
