A 21-year-old man from Marsaskala has been remanded in custody after admitting to a series of traffic offences linked to a four-vehicle collision in Triq tal-Barrani, Ħal Tarxien, which left a Transport Malta officer grievously injured.
Stoyan Gafa appeared before Magistrate Monica Vella on Wednesday, charged in connection with the crash that occurred at around 12.30am. Police said the collision involved a BMW 120 driven by a 24-year-old man from Nadur and a Mercedes E-Class driven by Gafa.
The Mercedes then crashed into a stationary Peugeot 208 occupied by two Transport Malta officers, aged 38 and 28, who were on duty preparing for road maintenance works. The impact pushed the Peugeot into a stationary Ford Transit belonging to maintenance workers.
Both officers were taken to Mater Dei Hospital. The 38-year-old was certified as suffering grievous injuries, while the 28-year-old sustained slight injuries.
In court, Gafa was also charged with driving under the influence of drugs and breaching two separate bail decrees issued in May 2025 and January 2026. The prosecution, led by Inspectors Clive Abela and Nathan Bugeja, said a urine sample taken after the crash tested positive for cannabis. Previous bail conditions included a €2,000 deposit and a €30,000 personal guarantee.
The court heard that Gafa is already facing separate criminal proceedings, including charges related to a fatal traffic accident in St Julian’s in December 2025.
Magistrate Vella deferred sentencing to 19th February and ordered that the accused be remanded in custody. Gafa was represented by legal aid lawyer Nadia Fiott.
