EU Sports Commissioner Glenn Micallef to boycott Winter Paralympics over Russia’s participation

The EU Sports, Youth and Culture Commissioner Glenn Micallef has announced that he will be boycotting the Paralympics event due to the participation of Russian athletes in the event. He said that whilst Russia’s aggression continues in Ukraine, he can not support the reinstatement of national symbols, flags, anthems and uniforms that are inseparable from that “conflict”.

He said that he is boycotting the event out of principle but also in solidarity with Ukrainian athletes.

Russia was allowed to participate once again in the Paralympics after it was suspended in 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine. The Paralympics follow the Winter Olympics.

    How does this square with the fact that no boycott was announced for the participation of Israel in the euro vision song festival. The atrocities perpetrated against the Palestinians deserve no solidarity, may I ask?
