We have reached a dystopian, absurd and banal stage in our political history in which the government appears intent on capturing the Judiciary wholesale and consolidating absolute control over the system of justice – paving the way for a de facto dictatorship under the Labour Party – while the political discourse grows ever more banal and ridiculous, not least because of the governmentโs continued efforts to dumb down the media and suppress the free press.
The Prime Minister is currently staging a political event with young people, promoting what he calls โgood politics,โ attempting to manufacture an atmosphere of normality and benevolent patronage – promising national parks and gestures of goodwill – while, at the same time, installing his criminal dictatorship by capturing democratic state institutions.
Adding to this atmosphere of banality, academics at the University of Malta seem to have resigned themselves to the situation, focusing instead on securing six-figure annual salaries in negotiations with the government.
It is striking how illiberal democracies increasingly seem to draw from the same playbook of the Soviet Union
