Malta ready for stern Türkiye examination in League B

The Malta Women’s National Team get their UEFA European Qualifiers League B campaign underway with a demanding away clash against Türkiye at Pendik Stadium in Istanbul on Tuesday.

The opener presents an immediate challenge at this level, something Head Coach Manuela Tesse recognises as both a test and an opportunity to build on past experience.

Looking back at Malta’s previous stint in League B, Tesse said it offered an important lesson in understanding the standards required to compete consistently at this level.

“Our first experience in League B gave us a clear picture of what is needed,” she explained. “At that time, perhaps both the players and I were not completely ready, but it was a crucial experience that helped us grow.”

That development, she believes, has strengthened the team’s mindset heading into the new campaign. In the lead-up to Tuesday’s fixture, Tesse has focused heavily on instilling confidence and belief within the squad.

“This time, I’ve spoken to the players about raising their confidence — they need to truly believe,” she said. “Expectations are naturally high after securing two consecutive promotions, but League B is extremely competitive.”

Malta travel to Istanbul fully aware of the quality Türkiye possess, particularly on home turf. Nevertheless, the squad heads into the match with determination and quiet assurance.

Forward Haley Bugeja echoed that sentiment ahead of kick-off: “We are not afraid. We’ve worked hard and prepared as well as we possibly can. Our objective is to come back with something to show for our efforts.”

The opening fixture is expected to set the tone for Malta’s League B journey, with the team intent on producing a disciplined and competitive display. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00hrs (CET) on Tuesday, with the match broadcast live on TVMSport+.
