Belgian authorities are investigating a terrorist attack after an explosion damaged a synagogue in the city of Liège early Monday.
The blast occurred outside the synagogue and caused structural damage to the building, including shattered windows. No injuries were reported. Police quickly sealed off the area while investigators examined the site and searched for evidence.
Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin condemned the incident, calling it “a despicable antisemitic act”, and said security would be reinforced around Jewish institutions across the country.
Federal prosecutors responsible for terrorism cases have opened an investigation into the explosion. Authorities have not yet identified a suspect, and no group has claimed responsibility.
Blast investigated near U.S. Embassy in Norway
In a separate incident, Norwegian police are investigating an explosion that occurred near the US Embassy Oslo over the weekend.
The blast damaged part of the entrance area of the embassy compound but caused no injuries. Authorities believe the explosion may have been caused by an improvised explosive device left outside the building.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage and searching for a suspect. Investigators have not ruled out terrorism as a possible motive.
European security services have increased monitoring following the two incidents as tensions remain high during the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
