European Snooker Championship – Gandía 2026; Four Maltese players progress as two top their groups

The group stage of the European Snooker Championship in Gandía, Spain is nearing its conclusion, with Maltese players enjoying a strong showing in the competition. Four Maltese competitors who have completed their group matches have already secured qualification for the knockout stages, with their final games determining whether they advanced as group winners or runners-up.

Aaron Busuttil and Chris Peplow both finished top of their respective groups, earning direct qualification to the last 64 and avoiding the play-off round.

Busuttil defeated Dutch player Sebastiaan Kan 3-1 with frame scores of 68-35, 16-56, 90-27, 75-17, while Peplow also secured a 3-1 victory over Germany’s Fabian Haken (67-42, 46-66, 74-14, 72-45). Peplow sealed his match in style with an impressive 72-point break in the final frame.

Meanwhile, Brian Cini and Joseph Casha also advanced but will have to pass through the play-off round before reaching the last 64. Their opponents will be confirmed after the completion of the remaining group matches.

Cini began the day strongly with a 3-0 win over Albania’s Diego Minxalli (67-17, 66-7, 63-49). However, he later suffered a surprise 3-0 defeat to 20-year-old Scotsman Amaan Iqbal (35-69, 26-60, 43-65).

Casha narrowly lost 3-2 to England’s Craig Steadman, a former professional player, in a closely contested encounter (30-65, 80-38, 63-37, 30-66, 58-69). Casha had led the match 2-1, but Steadman recovered to take the final two frames and secure victory.

Philip Ciantar did not play on Tuesday but still has a strong chance of progressing from his group. He is scheduled to face Portugal’s Miguel Ruivo on Wednesday morning. Even a 3-2 defeat would be enough for Ciantar to finish second in the group and reach the play-off round.

Should Ciantar qualify, all five Maltese players competing in Gandía would advance from the group stage, marking an impressive performance for Malta at this year’s championship.
