Two men have been arrested over the past 48 hours in connection with an alleged international drug trafficking operation, following coordinated police action.
The first arrest involved a 54-year-old Dutch national who had just arrived in Malta on Tuesday on a flight from Brussels. Police discovered approximately 1kg of a substance suspected to be cocaine concealed in his trousers, with an estimated street value exceeding โฌ130,000.
Extensive investigations revealed that the drugs were intended for a second individual believed to be a key figure in the local operation. Following prolonged surveillance, Police arrested a 43-year-old Moroccan national in Msida on Wednesday afternoon.
Searches carried out at his residence led to the seizure of over โฌ45,000 in cash, a Maserati, as well as a number of branded luxury items, including watches, jewellery, clothing, shoes and handbags.
A Magisterial Inquiry has been opened and is being led by Magistrate Dr Philip Galea Farrugia.
Both men remain under arrest and are expected to be arraigned in court today before Magistrate Dr Antoine Agius Bonnici. They are set to face charges related to drug importation, possession and trafficking, as well as money laundering and involvement in organised crime.
