Yesterday, government Ministers, Members of the Opposition, NGOs and professionals in the animals sector got together for the first National Animal Conference at the Salina Natural Reserve, organised by Vuċi għall-Annimali.
Opposition Leader Alex Borg also attended the conference and pledged to reform the Animal Welfare Commissioner by providing it with regulatory powers. He also said he would ensure that the entity would be autonomous. Agricultural Minister Anton Refalo was present along with the Prime Minister’s wife, Lydia Abela. Members of Momentum and ADPD Leader Sandra Gauci were also present, who urged for stronger regulation on the keeping of exotic animals. The Labour government decriminalised the keeping and trading of exotic and wild animals.
International organisations Four Paws and Animals Advocacy Group were also present who explained the Positive Lists in Europe which is being used to classify animals that can be kept and those which are prohibited. Vuċi Għall-Annimali has affirmed that the introduction of such lists in Malta would be a positive step forward.
