Transport Minister says Metro is “unaffordable”

Replying to questions by the Times of Malta, Transport Minister Chris Bonett said that the Labour government will not build a metro because it is too expensive. This is why the government is instead opting for a railway-line from the airport to Saint Paul’s Bay which will cost up to €2.8 billion and 15 years top build.

The metro originally would have cost up to €6.2 billion to build.

For the first time, we have an admission by a top government official that Malta doesn’t afford to build mega-projects and it has to contend with half-baked, Third-World ideas instead for the sake of PR campaigns, which ultimately only serve to fund the Labour government’s propogandists and its satellite press outlets.

As of now, we have heard consistent bravado and bragging by the government about its infinite spending on subsidies, after it spent more than €1.5 billion to keep electricity and fuel prices low. There is no bravado left for capital projects, as the money is running out.

Very nice cushion. Is it made in China?

The Thessaloniki Metro completed recently cost 3 billion. Similar population size. Same issues with lots of archeology finds to deal with.

    Something else must be afoot
