Nationalist Party Leader Alex Borg has announced his first electoral proposals yesterday during a mass rally in front of the Nationalist Party Headquarters in Pieta’. Alex Borg focused his first electoral proposal announcements on the health sector.
Among the proposals he pledged, Alex Borg promised a new hospital in the north of Malta in the Mellieħa area, a new hospital in Gozo, free medicine to all cancer patients, a major expansion of Mater Die and the close of Mount Carmel Hospital (the mental health hospital).
The Nationalist leader framed these proposals as part of a wider effort to modernise the healthcare system and address long-standing capacity issues, particularly at Mater Dei Hospital, which has recently faced increasing pressure due to population growth and rising demand for services.
Queues for appointments at Mater Dei and local health centres have also been noticeably increasing recently, with some Labour Party activists, including former MP Silvio Grixti, voicing their concerns about the growing pressure on Malta’s health centres as patients wait for their appointments.
Alex Borg accused the Labour government of failing to address the struggles of patients and of ignoring the health sector, instead focusing on covering up its failures and even its corruption, referring to the Vitals and Steward cases in which foreigners made off with public funds allocated for healthcare. He said that healthcare will be a major priority for a Nationalist government and pledged to drastically improve the whole health sector.
The Nationalist Party leader has made healthcare a central priority, shaped in part by his personal experience of losing his father to cancer.
Alex Borg will be contesting on the 11th (Mellieħa and Saint Paul’s Bay) and 12th districts (Gozo).
