Xewkija Tigers FC emerged victorious in dramatic fashion, defeating Qala Saints FC 2โ1 after extra time in the BOV GFA Cup final at the Gozo Stadium on Friday.
Qala Saints had taken the lead in the first half when Gilberto Martins Leite Carrara found the net on 29 minutes, giving his side a 1โ0 advantage at the break.
However, Xewkija Tigers responded early in the second half, with Claudio Daniel Frances levelling the score on 51 minutes to bring his team back into the contest.
With the match locked at 1โ1 after normal time, the final went into extra time, where the decisive moment arrived in the 111th minute. Angel Manuel Bustos converted from the penalty spot to put Xewkija ahead and ultimately secure the trophy.
Tensions boiled over deep into stoppage time, as both sides were reduced to ten men. Junior Adenilson Ferreira Dis Santos of Qala Saints and Rodeny Buttigieg of Xewkija Tigers were both shown red cards in the 120+5th minute.
The match was officiated by Daniel Casha.
Xewkija Tigersโ resilience and composure in extra time proved decisive, as they overturned an early deficit to claim silverware in a hard-fought final.
