Naxxar Lions and Mosta face crucial relegation showdown

The fight for Premier League survival reaches its climax today as four clubs battle to avoid relegation in two high-stakes play-off encounters.

At the National Stadium, fierce northern rivals Naxxar Lions and Mosta go head-to-head in what promises to be one of the most important editions of the Derby of the North in recent years.

Meanwhile, at the Tony Bezzina Stadium, Tarxien Rainbows and Żabbar St Patrick meet once again just days after their dramatic play-off clash earlier this week, with another winner-takes-all encounter deciding who retains Premier League status.

There appear to be no clear favourites in either match, underlining the tension and unpredictability surrounding today’s decisive fixtures.

The scheduling of both matches at 11am on Mother’s Day has, however, raised eyebrows, with concerns that the lunchtime kick-offs could affect attendance for two of the season’s most important matches.

The clash between Naxxar and Mosta carries extra significance beyond local bragging rights, with both clubs fighting to preserve their place in Malta’s top division.

Winston Muscat has overseen a remarkable turnaround at Naxxar Lions since replacing George Vella earlier in the campaign.

After finishing bottom of the Opening Round standings, the Lions produced a strong recovery during the Closing Round, securing a place in the Top Six ahead of established clubs such as Hibernians, Birkirkara and Sliema Wanderers.

Muscat insisted his players are fully focused on the task ahead.

“We always knew that if we failed to finish in the top two of the Closing Round Top Six we would end up in a relegation play-off,” Muscat said.

“The squad has worked extremely hard over the past weeks to prepare properly for this match.

“Previous derby results mean nothing now. What matters is how we perform today and whether we can secure our Premier League status.”

On the opposite bench, Mosta technical director Mario Muscat admitted Naxxar’s recent form makes them slight favourites but remains confident his side can rise to the occasion.

“This is a decisive match for both clubs,” Muscat said.

“The players know that only victory will be enough for us to remain in the Premier League.

“Naxxar improved significantly during the Closing Round and perhaps they enter this match with a slight advantage, but we believe in our qualities and know what this derby means.”

The second play-off sees Tarxien Rainbows and Żabbar St Patrick renew hostilities following Tuesday’s dramatic encounter, which Tarxien won 3-2 after extra-time.

Despite that victory, Tarxien coach Jacques Scerri warned that the previous result will count for little if his team fails to finish the job today.

“Tuesday’s win was important, but we have not achieved anything yet,” Scerri said.

“This is the biggest game of our season and we must remain focused and determined.

“The players have shown excellent character and fighting spirit in recent weeks and we need to show the same qualities again.”

Żabbar coach Gilbert Agius admitted he was disappointed by Tuesday’s defeat but praised his players’ performance and backed them to respond positively.

“We were disappointed with the result but not with the performance,” Agius said.

“The players remain calm and determined to put things right today.

“In matches like these, small details make all the difference. Now we need to learn from our mistakes and give everything to achieve survival.”
