Ħamrun Spartans F.C. and Valletta F.C. will both be aiming to bounce back from last weekend’s disappointment of missing out on a place in the Finalissima when they meet at the National Stadium on Friday evening (kick-off: 7pm).
Ħamrun Spartans are still recovering from the painful 2-1 extra-time defeat to Marsaxlokk F.C., a result that ended their hopes of retaining the Maltese championship title they had held for the past three seasons.
Friday’s clash carries enormous significance for the Spartans, as it represents a decisive opportunity to keep their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Conference League alive. Defeat against Valletta would leave them dependent on Valletta F.C. defeating Gżira United F.C. in the FA Trophy final later this month in order to secure a route back into European football.
The Spartans are fully aware of the challenge facing them. Their recent form has been inconsistent, while Valletta have already defeated them multiple times this season, including in the quarter-finals of both the Jubilee Cup and the FA Trophy.
Coach Giacomo Modica also faces selection concerns ahead of the encounter. Wing-back Ryan Camenzuli is ruled out through injury, while defender Emerson Marcelina is also doubtful after appearing to suffer a muscle injury during last weekend’s defeat to Marsaxlokk.
Despite these setbacks, Ħamrun know they must quickly regroup if they are to overcome a Valletta side eager to add further misery to the Spartans’ disappointing domestic campaign.
Valletta, meanwhile, will also be looking for redemption following their dramatic Final Four semi-final defeat to Floriana F.C., where they lost 3-1 on penalties after a goalless draw.
Coach Thane Micallef is monitoring the fitness of captain Steve Borg, who appeared to pick up an injury in the semi-final against Floriana. Apart from that concern, Valletta are expected to have a strong squad available as they aim to finish an impressive league campaign on a high against one of their biggest rivals.
Unlike Ħamrun, Valletta enter the match under less pressure, as they still have another pathway to European football through the upcoming FA Trophy final against Gżira United.
