Malta has retained the lowest unemployment rate in the euro area according to the latest Eurostat figures. Figures published yesterday by the NSO show that unemployment in Malta has edged up slightly from 3.% to 3.6% in April with the number of unemployed people increasing by 1.4% to a total of 12,400 people in April.
Maltaโs unemployment rate stood well below both the Euro area average of 6.3% and the EU average of 6.0%. Mata’s unemployment rate chart is posted below.
Across the EU, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Bulgaria at 2.8%, Poland at 3.0%, Czechia at 3.1% and Cyprus at 3.2%. Malta followed with 3.6%.
Within the Euro area, Cyprus had the lowest unemployment rate at 3.2%, followed by Malta at 3.6%, Germany at 3.8% and the Netherlands at 3.9%.
The highest unemployment rates were recorded in Finland at 10.6%, Spain at 10.3% and Greece at 9.5%. Sweden also registered a high unemployment rate of 8.6%, followed by France at 8.2%.
Eurostat estimated that 13.238 million people were unemployed across the EU in April, of whom 11.075 million were in the Euro area. Compared with March, unemployment decreased by 137,000 in the EU and by 84,000 in the Euro area.
Youth unemployment remained significantly higher than the headline rate. In April, the youth unemployment rate stood at 15.1% in the EU and 14.7% in the Euro area. Maltaโs youth unemployment rate stood at 9.1%, equivalent to around 3,000 young people under the age of 25.
