The G7 meeting in France has ended on a high note for Ukraine, as the group agreed to provide more air-defence support, additional systems and interceptors, and long-range capabilities to help Ukraine resist Russian attacks. G7 leaders also agreed to increase sanctions against Russia, including against its oil and gas sectors.
Yesterday, President Donald Trump also said that the United States could soon reimpose sanctions on Russian oil shipments after some sanctions were temporarily eased during the war with Iran to help reduce pressure on oil prices.
The statement marks a significant moment for Ukraine because it also opens the door for Kyiv to manufacture Western weapons under licence. Ukraine has been asking for permission to produce Patriot missiles and other Western air-defence systems domestically, as it continues to suffer from shortages of interceptors against Russian ballistic missile attacks.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the G7 summit delivered important results for Ukraine, especially on air defence, energy resilience and new sanctions against Russia. The G7 also agreed to provide further support to help Ukraine get through next winter, as Russia continues to attack the country’s energy infrastructure.
French President Emmanuel Macron described the summit as a moment of renewed unity on Ukraine, saying that G7 leaders, including the United States, now recognise that Russia is not serious about peace. President Trump met Zelensky twice on the sidelines of the summit, while European leaders pressed for stronger military and economic pressure on Moscow.
The G7 statement also welcomed the US-Iran deal and supported efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Leaders said that France and the United Kingdom could lead a defensive initiative to help resume maritime traffic through the Strait by protecting merchant vessels and supporting verification that mines are removed.
