British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned in a speech in front of Downing Street, with Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony playing in the background. The British Prime Minister said that he had inherited a party that was bankrupt financially and politically, and managed to bring it back to new heights with a landslide win in 2024.
He said he will put the interests of the country first and resign. He has also ordered a Labour Party leadership contest to replace him as Labour leader by September. He will remain as Interim Prime Minister until the new leader is elected.
Andy Burnham is touted as a favourite, although other nominees are also putting their names forward for the contest.
