Economy Minister Silvio Schembri has been known for a while to have hidden sources of income as he rapidly expanded his wealth while in politics. His wife has also become involved in the real-estate and construction business.
Before entering politics, the Minister barely ever had more than €2,000 in his bank account and had to depend on his friends for drinks when going out in weekends (I was there).
Recently, he donated €30,000 to Parish Church of Luqa. He announced his donation during Mass: an unprecedented scene in Malta where Mass is supposedly non-political and a moment of unity for the Catholic brethren.
His salary is €57,000 per annum.
This is probably the first ever documented instance where Mass has been used as a political platform for the propaganda of the Labour Party and its politicians.
