The transfer of the National Book Council to the Culture Ministry is wrong: here is why

I have just received news today that the National Book Council has been transferred to the Culture Ministry. The move seems to be supported by some individuals who are cosplaying as experts under the carnivalesque dressing of NGOs.

The move is senseless and totally wrong for many reasons. It is also irregular given that the law clearly states that Book Council is an autonomous entity under the Ministry of Education and the government is yet to change this law.

The National Book Council is an entity that is supposed to cater for the book industry: it is not an entity that exclusively caters for artists. Literature is just one segment of the book industry.

Under the auspices of an authoritarian government, this move makes sense because it will automatically exclude the segment of the book industry that is educational, journalistic and academic, which is much larger than the literary sector. The former is the section where the information industry produces criticism of the government.

Policy in the arts and culture in Malta is being conducted by amateurs who have mainly never done or produced anything themselves and have spent most of their experience working with the government cosplaying as experts.

This is also part of the government’s work to further entrench its control over the information industry in Malta.

What a total shame.

  1. […] who advised the government to remove the National Book Council from the Ministry of Education have no idea what they are doing and no expertise on the subject. […]
