Premier Robert Abela is disconnected from reality – Opposition Leader Alex Borg

Opposition Leader Alex Borg has finally come out of his long break to do some opposition to the government, and this time he is right on point. The Nationalist Party leader has accused Prime Minister Robert Abela of being disconnected from reality after he told Times of Malta journalist Mark Laurence Żammit that the Maltese people are doing much better, as more people are starting to buy boats and take two holidays per year.

PN Leader Alex Borg rebutted this by pointing out that one in five people in Malta is at risk of poverty, including many pensioners. He also accused the Prime Minister of being disconnected from reality.

Given the reactions on social media following the interview, my guess is that the majority of the Maltese actually agree with the PN leader this time round. The Prime Minister was subjected to a great deal of ridicule yesterday.

I think I know what prompted the Prime Minister to make such superfluous comments. Feeling comfortable enough that the journalist in front of him was giving him a friendly interview with an accommodating tone, the Prime Minister relished the friendly conversation and followed a train of thought that was very personal and not at all professional. The consequences were disastrous for both of them, with the Prime Minister speaking from the perspective of his own personal experience and his small circle of friends, while the journalist refused to challenge him.
