So far, there seems to be no change in Malta’s foreign policy as the new Minister for Foreign Affairs, Chris Fearne, takes on his role. At the conclusion of this week’s EU Council meeting, the Foreign Minister delineated Malta’s foreign policy positions, all of which are aligned with the previous foreign policy adhered to by Minister Ian Borg.
Foreign Minister Chris Fearne reiterated that Malta is concerned about the ongoing conflicts in the Near East, that international law should be upheld, and that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open without tolls. He also reiterated Malta’s concern about the ongoing conflict in Palestine by Israel and asserted his solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The Foreign Minister also insisted on strict monitoring of Russia’s shadow fleet entering the Mediterranean Sea to prevent any environmental disaster, but fell short of publicly reiterating the demand made by his predecessor to keep these ships away from Malta’s shores.
Separately, the Foreign Minister also publicly demanded that Russia release the Ukrainian detainees held in the Russian-occupied regions of Ukraine.
