A 15-year-old Pakistani teenager who was residing in Xgħajra has tragically died after getting into difficulty while swimming off the coast of Xgħajra.
The incident occurred at around 4.45pm on Saturday, when police were informed that assistance was required in the area of the Xgħajra slipway.
Police officers, together with a medical team from Mater Dei Hospital, immediately rushed to the scene, where they found the teenager unconscious.
The boy had been pulled from the sea by people who were at the scene, who also began administering first aid before the arrival of emergency services.
He was subsequently taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance for further medical treatment, but was unfortunately certified dead shortly afterwards.
Magistrate Dr Monica Borg Galea LL.D has been informed of the case and has appointed an inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Police investigations are ongoing.
In a separate incident, a one-year-and-seven-month-old girl from Żabbar is in serious condition after getting into difficulty in the sea at Marsaxlokk.
The incident occurred at around 10.30pm on Saturday, when police were informed that assistance was needed in the area of Il-Magħluq Bay.
According to preliminary information, the toddler had briefly wandered away from her family members and entered the sea on her own. She is understood to have swallowed some water and began experiencing breathing difficulties.
Police officers and a medical team immediately rushed to the scene, where they found the child being assisted by relatives.
The girl was transported to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, where she is receiving medical treatment.
Magistrate Dr Monica Borg Galea LL.D has been informed of the case and has appointed an inquiry.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
