It has been another long day for thousands of residents across Malta and Gozo today, as several localities have experienced or are experiencing power cuts. A fault in the Iklin-Balzan-Lija-Birkirkara area has persisted throughout the day, with several residents reporting cuts lasting close to 12 hours.
Xemxija, St Paul’s Bay, and Mellieha are also without power in some areas, whilst residents from Zurrieq told The Maltese Heraldย that there are at least 34 streets affected by power cuts and they have not been provided with an estimated time when power will return. Reports have also come of power cuts in Mosta and Baฤงar ic-ฤagฤงaq as well as Victoria, Gozo.
The Nationalist Party has called for an urgent discussion in Parliament over the situation but so far the government has not responded.
In the meantime, several thousand Melita customers were also affected by a cut in internet services due to a contractor damaging a cable in Msida. When doorstepped by media outside Parliament, Energy Minister Miriam Dalli said that the distribution network was coping well with demand.
The Maltese Islands are also experiencing a brutal heatwave with temperatures reaching 41 degrees in some areas. Tuesday is expected to be similar, while there should be some respite by Wednesday night.
