Floriana’s UEFA Conference League campaign came to a heartbreaking end on Tuesday night as they suffered a 2-1 extra-time defeat to FC Drita in Pristina, with the Kosovo champions progressing 3-2 on aggregate.
The Greens looked on course for a memorable qualification after Paul Mbong’s first-half strike handed them the lead on the night and a 2-1 aggregate advantage.
However, FC Drita produced a dramatic late comeback, equalising five minutes from the end of normal time before an unfortunate own goal early in extra time ended Floriana’s European adventure.
Floriana made an assured start and created the first clear opportunity when Myles Beerman won possession high up the pitch, allowing Kenan Dervisagic to unleash a powerful effort that was deflected just over the crossbar with goalkeeper Faton Maloku beaten.
Although Drita enjoyed plenty of possession during the opening stages, they struggled to create meaningful openings against a disciplined Floriana defence.
Instead, it was the Maltese side who continued to threaten. On the half-hour, Paul Mbong delivered a low cross into the path of Dervisagic, but the striker failed to make clean contact and Maloku gathered comfortably.
Floriana’s positive approach was rewarded five minutes before the interval. Breaking quickly on the counter, Mbong showed excellent footwork to create space on the edge of the area before drilling a low shot beyond Maloku to give the Greens a deserved lead.
The goal capped an impressive first-half performance from Floriana, who combined solid defending with dangerous attacking transitions.
The visitors continued to look the more threatening side after the restart. On 53 minutes Ivan Kurtalic fired narrowly wide before Federico Varela’s long-range effort a minute later was blocked.
Drita finally came close on 59 minutes when Ismet Jashari’s cross found Blerim Krasniqi, whose powerful header was well saved by Gabriele Cioletti.
The home side began to increase the pressure as the second half progressed. Arbnor Manaj volleyed over on 73 minutes before Wout Baeten also failed to hit the target with a close-range header eight minutes later.
Just when Floriana appeared to be closing in on qualification, Drita found the breakthrough in the 85th minute. Substitute Raddy Ovuoka produced an excellent run down the right before squaring for Jetmir Pellumbi, who calmly finished to level the match and force extra time.
The Kosovo champions struck again almost immediately after the restart. Within the opening minute of extra time, Ovuoka again broke clear down the right and his dangerous low cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by Floriana defender Kauan, giving Drita the lead for the first time in the tie.
Ovuoka nearly added a third shortly afterwards, but his powerful effort flew over the crossbar.
Floriana pushed forward in search of an equaliser that would have taken the tie to penalties, but Drita defended resolutely to secure their place in the third qualifying round, where they will face San Marino’s Tre Fiori.
Despite the disappointment, Floriana can take pride from a disciplined and committed display that came within minutes of extending their European campaign.
