Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez held a press conference at the Palacio de la Asamblea (Palace of the Assembly of the Autonomous City of Ceuta), announcing that the Moroccans who entered Ceuta illegally yesterday will be repatriated.
The Spanish Prime Minister reiterated that his government is working with Morocco on the issue and blamed the events on human-trafficking mafias.
Local shops remained closed in Ceuta today, and the Spanish premier said that the government would assess the situation and offer assistance to affected businesses.
Official estimates released by the Spanish government this morning state that up to 49,000 people, mostly men, crossed the border during yesterday’s chaotic events. Around 7,000 of them are thought to be minors.
At the same time, the Spanish Prime Minister reiterated that migration policy is central to his government and has been developed in partnership with other European countries, as he responded to Italy’s criticism.
