Judo: Katryna Esposito wins bronze in Glasgow

Katryna Esposito added another significant achievement to her career by winning the bronze medal in the women’s -48kg category at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Maltese judoka successfully defended the bronze medal she won at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, producing a series of impressive performances at the SEC Centre.

Esposito began her campaign with a confident victory over Mauritius’ Marie Thomas. From the opening exchanges, the Maltese judoka established control through strong grips and pressure, eventually securing the win with a waza-ari.

Her next contest was against Canada’s higher-ranked Heidi Quach in what developed into a gruelling eight-minute encounter. Esposito fought hard throughout, but Quach eventually prevailed by ippon to book her place in the gold medal final.

Esposito responded in determined fashion in the bronze medal contest, where she faced Scotland’s Eva Ewing, who had the backing of the home crowd.

The Maltese judoka took control from the outset and scored early before producing the decisive moment of the contest. Esposito applied a superb armlock, forcing Ewing to tap out and securing an ippon victory.

The result earned Esposito a second consecutive Commonwealth Games bronze medal, confirming her position among Malta’s leading judokas on the international stage.

Ewing had reached the bronze medal contest through the repechage after losing her quarter-final against India’s Asmita Dey. Dey went on to claim the gold medal in the -48kg category.
