The rich and well-connected have been largely insulated from Malta’s latest round of prolonged power cuts during peak summer temperatures, escaping the consequences and stress by simply jetting off on holiday.
Perhaps these are the people Prime Minister Robert Abela had in mind when he boasted that the Maltese are getting richer and can now afford two holidays and a boat: the nouveaux riches who greased the machinery of the state and its public entities and are now enjoying the spoils, while the plebs are left to endure sweltering summer heat without electricity.
While you had no electricity at home, Michelle Muscat was in Amalfi, Italy. She nevertheless made sure to inform us—twice—that she was there only after a week of hard work.
