The Labour Party has rejected a request by the Nationalist Party at the Public Accounts Committee to discuss the ongoing power cuts and the government’s alleged €140 million expenditure on the electricity grid, with reference to a report published by the Auditor General in 2024.
The report originally examined the power-cut crisis of 2023. Labour government members of the PAC, including Ramona Attard and Nigel Vella, said that they wanted to postpone the discussion until the Auditor General updates his report by the end of the year. The proposal to discuss the ongoing power-cut crisis was therefore aborted, with Labour government members threatening to overturn the practice whereby the Opposition chooses the PAC’s first item of discussion.
The PAC meeting was held on Wednesday, 29 July.
Energy Minister Miriam Dalli has consistently avoided public scrutiny and refused to divulge information on a wide range of matters concerning the government’s management of Malta’s energy supply and Enemalta, opting instead to spend significant amounts of public money on propaganda and advertisements in the local press.
