Malta’s U20 women’s water polo team celebrated their first victory at the European Aquatics U20 Women’s Water Polo Championships in Oeiras, Portugal, after edging Ireland 8-7 in a thrilling encounter.
In a closely fought contest, the Maltese youngsters showed resilience and composure to hold off a spirited Irish fightback, securing a hard-earned one-goal victory.
Chloe Amato led the way for Malta with an outstanding four-goal haul, proving the difference between the two sides in a match that remained in the balance until the final whistle.
Nevise Agius added two goals, while Eyla Schembri and Holly Camilleri each found the net once to complete Malta’s scoring.
Having faced some of Europe’s stronger nations earlier in the tournament, Malta produced one of its best displays of the championship, combining disciplined defending with clinical finishing at crucial moments.
The victory provides a welcome reward for the young Maltese squad and reflects the progress made throughout the competition against high-quality opposition.
