Student organisations have called for justice for Charlotte Żammit, highlighting that her killing is not an isolated tragedy but another painful reminder of violence against women in Malta. SDM and other student organisations said that Charlotte deserves justice and called for accountability and lasting change in the fight against gender-based violence.
Charlotte Żammit, 44, was shot dead at a residence in Triq Corrado, Żabbar, on Saturday. Her partner, 42-year-old Roderick Azzopardi, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of killing her, while Police recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. He is expected to be arraigned on Monday.
Azzopardi had already been prosecuted and convicted over domestic violence against Charlotte.
Żammit filed a report against him in 2016, following which he was arrested and arraigned in Court. In 2017, Azzopardi pleaded guilty to injuring Żammit, detaining her against her will and threatening to kill her. He was sentenced to one year in prison.
Żammit filed another report against Azzopardi in 2017. That case concerned allegations that he had insulted her. Azzopardi was once again arrested and taken to Court but was eventually acquitted of the charges.
Full press release below.
“We are devastated by the tragic death of Charlotte Zammit, a 44-year-old woman whose life was taken in our community.
We extend our deepest condolences to Charlotte’s family, her loved ones, and everyone affected by this tragedy.
Charlotte’s life mattered. Yet she now joins an unacceptable list of women in Malta whose lives have been cut short by domestic and gender-based violence.
This is not an isolated tragedy. It is a painful reminder of the violence that women continue to face, and of the urgent need for a society where every woman can live without fear.
Charlotte deserves justice. Her death must strengthen our resolve to demand meaningful action, accountability, and lasting change in the fight against domestic and gender-based violence.
Our grief must fuel more urgency to protect the women in our lives and demand justice for women like Charlotte.”
