Birkirkara make winning start with emphatic victory over Gżira

Birkirkara made an impressive start to the 2026-27 season as they defeated Gżira United 4-0 in a one-sided encounter at the Centenary Stadium.

Amarildo Jr opened the scoring after nine minutes before Franklin Sasere added a second seven minutes later. Sasere converted from the penalty spot shortly after the interval to make it 3-0, while Louis Pahoma completed the scoring six minutes from time.

The result reflected Birkirkara’s dominance throughout the match, with Paul Zammit’s side looking dangerous in attack while remaining solid defensively.

Gżira, in contrast, struggled to find a response and were unable to cope with Birkirkara’s attacking movement, particularly the combination of Amarildo and Sasere.

The Stripes needed only nine minutes to take the lead. New signing Amarildo showed impressive pace and skill to beat three opponents before sending a low drive past Gżira goalkeeper Karl Sargeant.

Birkirkara almost doubled their advantage four minutes later when Sasere’s volley fell into the path of Amarildo, but the Brazilian fired over from close range.

The second goal arrived on 18 minutes. Sasere latched onto a long pass from Aleandro Garzia and calmly slid the ball past the advancing Sargeant.

Birkirkara continued to control proceedings and nearly added a third just before half-time. Amarildo raced onto a long pass but was denied by Sargeant, with the loose ball falling to Rafa Santos, who attempted to chip the goalkeeper but sent his effort wide of an unguarded goal.

The Stripes resumed where they had left off and extended their advantage three minutes into the second half.

Garzia went down inside the penalty area following a challenge by Andy Borg and referee Alex Johnson pointed to the spot. Sasere stepped up and confidently drilled the penalty into the net to make it 3-0.

Birkirkara continued to push forward despite having effectively settled the contest.

Sasere almost completed his hat-trick on 56 minutes when he unleashed a powerful drive which Sargeant did well to keep out.

The resulting corner eventually found Wesley Frazan unmarked, but his header was somehow turned behind by the Gżira goalkeeper.

Sasere thought he had completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining after racing forward and firing past Sargeant, but the assistant referee’s flag was raised for offside and the goal was ruled out.

Birkirkara did get their fourth goal six minutes from time, however, when Louis Pahoma marked his competitive debut by flicking the ball past Sargeant.

The final whistle confirmed a convincing 4-0 victory for Birkirkara, who made an early statement of intent with a performance that combined attacking efficiency with defensive organisation.

For Gżira, it was a difficult opening night as they struggled to impose themselves and were punished by a Birkirkara side that took full advantage of the opportunities presented to them.
