Employment keeps increasing in Malta

According to the latest NSO figures, registered full-time employment in Malta increased by 4.7% in March 2026 compared with the same month last year, reaching 307,783 workers. Compared with February, full-time employment increased by another 0.5%.

The increase amounts to 13,726 additional full-time jobs over one year. The largest increases came from administrative and support service activities, which added 1,898 workers, followed by information and communication with another 1,562.

Private-sector employment accounted for most of the increase. The number of full-time workers in the private sector rose by 11,609 to 251,693, an annual increase of 4.8%. Public-sector employment also continued to grow, increasing by 2,117 workers to 56,090, or 3.9% over the previous year.

The number of people registered as full-time self-employed increased by 871, while the number of registered employees increased by 12,855. Male and female full-time employment both increased by 4.7%, reaching 185,193 men and 122,590 women.

Part-time employment grew even faster. The total number of registered part-time jobs increased by 9.9% compared with March 2025, with transportation and storage adding 1,528 part-time workers and accommodation and food services another 1,127.

The number of people holding a part-time job on top of full-time employment reached 51,206, an increase of 11.9% in one year. Another 36,844 people depended on part-time work as their primary occupation, up by 7.3%.

Overall labour supply, excluding part-timers, increased by 4.7% to 309,070. Registered unemployment also increased slightly, by 230 people compared with March 2025.
