Throughout its years in government, enabling impunity for corruption, a Jungle Rules-style construction boom, and a total disregard for the institutions of the State, apart from fostering a conservative culture, hatred for journalists, and hostility towards critical thinking, Labour is also stoking hatred towards the commons and the environment.
See the exhibit below by St Julian’s local councillor Mario Amaira, who told the Malta Ranger Unit “to fuck off” after the Malta Ranger Unit reported illegal fishing in the Ċirkewwa Marine Park.
The Malta Ranger Unit is a group founded by volunteers to fill a much-needed gap in environmental monitoring and enforcement, since the government refuses to carry out the latter. They are basically doing a very important job that the State should be doing, and they do much of it without getting paid.
Currently, the Malta Ranger Unit is also facing financial challenges, and helping the group would effectively help preserve what is left of Malta’s natural environment. Recently the Mala Ranger Unit announced it will be stop monitoring the Ċirkewwa Marine Park due to lack of funding. The incident took place soon after they made the announcement.
These rangers should be lauded and supported. Labour wants to ensure their demise, following its policy and intention to dismantle whatever environmental monitoring and enforcement still remains.
