Valletta claimed the BOV Super Cup for the 14th time in their history after defeating rivals Floriana 2-0 at the National Stadium on Monday evening.
An Amar Drina own goal gave the Lilywhites a first-half advantage before Andrea Zammit doubled their lead after the break, shortly after Floriana had been reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Paul Mbong.
Floriana made the brighter start and produced the first effort on target when Myles Beerman cut inside from the left before seeing his shot turned behind by Valletta goalkeeper Adilson Aguero Dos Santos.
The Greens went even closer in the 14th minute when Gaston Manuel Romano unleashed a curling effort from the left which struck the woodwork.
Despite Floriana’s promising opening, it was Valletta who broke the deadlock against the run of play in the 21st minute.
Diogo Joao Regala De Figueiredo Tavares broke clear down the right before delivering a low cross into the area which was inadvertently diverted into his own net by Drina.
The goal lifted Valletta, who began exerting greater pressure on the Floriana defence. Zammit threatened to double their advantage before Alex De Aguiar Gomes also went close in the 25th minute.
Floriana responded and almost restored parity ten minutes before half-time when Federico Nicholas Varela Escudero’s effort took a deflection off a Valletta defender and travelled narrowly wide.
However, Thane Micallef’s side protected their advantage to head into the interval 1-0 ahead.
Valletta emerged strongly after the restart and twice threatened within a matter of seconds. Zammit was released through on goal but was denied by Guilherme Cioletti Ferreira Da Silva before Roko Prsa saw his effort dramatically cleared off the line.
Floriana’s task became significantly more difficult in the 56th minute.
Zammit broke clear on a counter-attack and Mbong brought down the Valletta forward while attempting to recover. The Floriana player was shown a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Valletta took advantage of their numerical superiority five minutes later.
After Floriana had threatened to equalise, the Lilywhites launched another quick counter-attack. Jake Azzopardi released Zammit, who kept his composure to beat Ferreira Da Silva and make it 2-0.
Despite being a man down, Floriana continued searching for a route back into the contest, but the Valletta defence remained solid and successfully protected its clean sheet until the final whistle.
The victory handed Valletta another piece of silverware and their 14th BOV Super Cup triumph, while Zammit’s decisive contribution earned him the Gillette Player of the Match award.
