Alkagesta issues a statement and demands us to apologise

Alkagesta is taking further SLAPP action in its one-year long systematic campaign of legal warfare against The Maltese Herald. They have now issued a statement on their website demanding that we apologise and to pull down the articles about the company, while accusing us of conducting a campaign against them on behalf of their competitors.

The allegation that we are conducting a campaign against them on behalf of their competitors is a libelous and vexatious and an outright lie. We obviously deny this accusation in its entirety and unequivocally and none of our investigations are paid or sponsored by financial or commercial competitors with all our donors being small donors.

We will be asking Alkagesta to present evidence about this spurious allegation in Court.

Alkagesta has been conducting a very wide and systematic SLAPP action campaign against us which has affected us our presence on online media platforms including Instagram and a demonetarisation by GoogleAds.

Alkagesta also said they have tried to engage with us to clear the record and this is also a lie. Alkagesta sent us two rights of replies which we have published according to legal obligations. Never have never sent any explanation or structured explanation backing their denials which mostly consist of very dry PR statements that they are compliant.

Alkagesta is a company from Azerbaijan that has set up a strong presence in Malta despite being listed by a United Nations Security Council report as a sanctions-busting actor of Libyan oil. They have also imported Russian into Malta.

The situation should be clarified clearly and unequivocally. This is a very shady foreign company which has acted with impunity in Malta and elsewhere and is now waging legal warfare against journalists and the press in the host country that has welcomed it.
