Leonard Caruana and Elaine Rizzo appointed Judges

President Myriam Spiteri Debono has appointed Magistrates Leonard Caruana and Elaine Rizzo as Judges of the Superior Courts following a selection process carried out by the Judicial Appointments Committee.

The appointments follow a public call issued by Justice Minister Clifton Grima in July, which attracted 21 eligible candidates.

For the first vacancy, the Committee shortlisted Magistrates Leonard Caruana, Elaine Rizzo and Gabriella Vella, with the President selecting Caruana.

For the second vacancy, the shortlisted candidates were Magistrates Jean Paul Grech, Elaine Rizzo and Gabriella Vella, with the President selecting Rizzo.

The Office of the President said the two appointments complete the process launched by the July public call and thanked the Judicial Appointments Committee for its work.

Attributing motive to the President’s decision is simply pure speculation as you can never know what goes on in people’ s minds. In my opinion our President is beyond reproach and deserves full respect and trust. She has proven herself time and again. Her reputation precedes her. If anything having the President and not the Government make the final selection is without doubt a much better system.
