Protests erupted across Venezuela after Venezuela’s unelected President, Delcy Rodríguez, gave a speech at the United Nations General Assembly. Protesters held placards denouncing constant power cuts and shortages of basic and essential goods.
Meanwhile, Venezuelan Opposition Leader María Corina Machado is still trying to attempt a return to Venezuela after several of her attempts were blocked by the US government. She is currently in Panama where she is trying to arrange for a flight to take her to Caracas, but efforts remain to withhold her return.
Machado’s failed return
The opposition leader has attempted to enter the country at least seven times since leaving in December 2025, when she managed to escape Venezuela by boat to Curaçao. From there, she took a private plane directly to Norway to attend the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize events. After the long journey, Machado arrived in Oslo after the awards ceremony had already taken place.
Curiously, while Delcy Rodríguez told the UN General Assembly that Venezuela would hold elections and transition towards what she described as a “full democracy”, Machado failed three times in her attempts to enter the country.
Uncertainty over the situation
Likewise, protesters have questioned these statements and are demanding immediate elections. Their demands also include an end to the power cuts and shortages of basic goods affecting Venezuelans’ daily lives.
Meanwhile, Rodríguez has attributed the power cuts to high temperatures.
Uncertainty remains part of everyday life for Venezuelans. While they try to maintain hope for Machado’s return, Rodríguez continues talks with the US government.
Questions continue to grow over the so-called “democratic transition” that Rodríguez and Trump have repeatedly discussed.
Chanting “María Corina, we are waiting for you”, protesters are seeking not only the return of their opposition leader but also to increase pressure on Delcy Rodríguez’s government.
