Valletta Mayor Olaf McKay has published a very political statement on his refusal to issue permits for banners to commemorate Daphne Caruana Galizia, as has been the custom for years after she was murdered on October 16th, 2027.
He made a very politically charged statement invoking his authority as mayor, saying that Valletta is not a place where people can hang whatever they want.
Since when was the Valletta Mayor appointed as the censor of City Gate?
Obviously, this is a very political statement aimed at increasing his popularity with the popularity crowd. Labourites are already congratulating him and cheering his decision in spite of what they consider, in their superstition and illiteracy, their own fellow Maltese enemies.
After invoking his authority as the guardian of laws in Valletta, Olaf McKay explains that there is a danger with the banners due to the balustrades, which are getting fickle according to him. He has also published some photos of the balustrades with his post.
This is the first time the Valletta Mayor is invoking his authority publicly to uphold the law in Valletta: the Mayor remained silent when the government allowed restaurant and bar owners to keep their music playing throughout the night despite protestations by Valletta residents.
We are already at the stage of the illiberal regime. Olaf McKay is just one of the many Labour Party politicians who will despicably exploit the current political situation with authoritarianism to push forward their political career. Many more will follow him.
