Malta to host COMEN Open Water Swimming Cup at Mellieħa Bay

Malta will welcome young swimmers from across the Mediterranean when the COMEN Open Water Swimming Cup 2026 takes place at Mellieħa Bay on 10 and 11 October.

The international competition will bring together promising young athletes in two age categories, providing Maltese swimmers with an opportunity to compete against international opposition on home soil.

The event will feature individual races and mixed relays, with organisers encouraging strong Maltese participation across all categories.

The competition is open to boys and girls aged between 14 and 17, divided into two age groups.

Age Group A will comprise swimmers aged 14 and 15, born in 2011 and 2012, who will compete in the 5km individual event.

Age Group B will feature swimmers aged 16 and 17, born in 2009 and 2010, competing over a distance of 7.5km.

Both age categories will also have the opportunity to participate in the 5km mixed relay, consisting of four swimmers who will each complete a 1.25km leg.

Each relay team must include two boys and two girls, providing additional opportunities for young swimmers to represent Malta in international competition.

With the event taking place in Maltese waters, there is particular emphasis on assembling a strong national contingent capable of competing against swimmers from other Mediterranean countries.

Selection for the Maltese team may take into consideration performances in both open-water and pool competitions, allowing swimmers from different competitive backgrounds to be considered.

Interested swimmers and their parents are being encouraged to contact their respective club coaches to discuss potential participation and selection.

The competition represents an opportunity for Malta’s emerging swimming talent to gain valuable international experience while competing in familiar surroundings.

The COMEN Open Water Swimming Cup 2026 will be held at Mellieħa Bay on Saturday, 10 October, and Sunday, 11 October.
