Electricity supply increased by 3.2% in 2025

According to statistics released today by the NSO, the electricity consumption in Malta increased by up to 3.2% in 2025 to a total of 3,207.1 GWh.

The increase in electricity supply comes as Malta continues to experience recurring and widespread power cuts, particularly during the Summer peak demand period. Widespread power disruptions took place as of earlier today.

In 2025 Malta’s annual average electricity demand increased by 2.9% to 492 MW.

Peak demand was significantly higher. July recorded the highest electricity demand of the year at 637 MW, followed by August at 585 MW. July also recorded the highest monthly electricity supply, at 362.6 GWh, while August followed with 334.6 GWh.

The latest statistics also show that Malta continues to rely heavily on electricity imported through the interconnector with Sicily. Imports through the interconnector reached 1,031.0 GWh in 2025, an increase of 6.2% over the previous year. Net imports accounted for 32.1% of Malta’s electricity supply.

Electricity generated from renewable sources also increased, rising by 8.1% to 363.4 GWh. Photovoltaic panels accounted for 96.8% of renewable electricity generation. Electricity produced by power plants increased by 0.5% to 1,858.3 GWh.

Malta’s electricity supply in 2025 consisted of 56.5% locally generated electricity, 32.1% net imports through the interconnector and 11.3% from renewable sources.

The latest NSO figures show that the pressure on the system is continuing to grow, with electricity demand increasing even as Malta continues to experience repeated interruptions to supply.
