Labour has literally done the opposite of what it is pledging to do with regard to tourism and has just signed a deal with Trip.com to promote Malta as a tourist destination in China.
The agreement, announced yesterday by the DOI, was signed by the Malta Tourism Authority. The MTA sponsors marketing and advertising campaigns promoting Malta as a tourist destination throughout the world. This probably means that the agreement is just another sponsorship, yet the government is spending further public funds to supposedly promote this as a win.
This also goes directly against Labour’s pledges to shift away from mass tourism and turn towards attracting higher-quality tourists. Instead, Labour is doubling down on its mass tourism strategy by targeting a very large market that could bring in many more tourists, who may even have less spending power than potential European tourists.
