On Thursday last week, the European Parliament adopted a non-binding motion by the European Cosnervatives and Reformists (ECR), forwarded by French MEP Céline Imart that calls for the identification of Muslim entryism networks to Europe and the proposal to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation.
The Muslim Brotherhood originated in Egypt in 1928 and has developed networks across the Arab world and in Europe. The resolution focuses on what its supporters describe as strategies of political and institutional entryism, implying that the Muslim Brotherhood and other Muslim organisations would try to attempt to influence European
Prior to the resolution, on 29 April 2026, an ECR-organised conference on the same subject was held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Organised by Nicolas Bay, it featured Céline Imart among other MEPs and included the participation of the UAE Ambassador to the EU, SE Mohamed Al Sahlawi.
What is ironic here is that the ECR is adopting the foreign-policy of the United Arab Emirates towards the Muslim Brotherhood and is importing it word by word to the European Parliament. The UAE has been conducting an extensive international campaign against the Muslim Brotherhood and also uses the designation to attack it rivals such as the government of Sudan.
In Europe, public funding of religious organisations and the influence of religion in politics mostly revolve around Christianity, and particularly the Catholic Church. The resolution, however, focuses exclusively on Islam, with a strong emphasis on the Muslim Brotherhood. In addition, the resolution attributes excessive capabilities and influence to the Muslim Brotherhood that do not reflect its actual reality, revealing that this over-emphasis on one particular organisation among Muslim and Islamic groups has been imported directly from the UAE.
